Where We Are & Local History

We cover one of the most natural, unspoilt parts of Powys, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, starting 5 miles along the A40 west of Brecon. The area (about 36 sq miles) is entirely rural, with fields, woodland and many farmsteads to be seen on the side of the hills. It reaches from the edge of the Sennybridge Training Area on the Eppynt in the north, following streams down to the wide valley of the Usk, and continuing on up to the beautiful moorland on Mynydd Illtyd in the south, with its backdrop of Pen-y-Fan and Corn Ddu.

Trallong is a hamlet facing south, looking down on the upper reaches of the River Usk and with spectacular panoramic views of much of the Brecon Beacons range of hills. Aberbran is a farming community bordering just north of the Usk, and the medieval buildings of Aberbran Fawr stand between the river and the A40.

Penpont is a parish set in the lovely Usk Valley on the south side of the river, and within the boundaries of the Beacons National Park. The ancient historic mansions of Abercamlais and Penpont, and the parish church altered by Gilbert Scott in 1870, can all be seen just beside the main road a mile or so further west.

Llanfihangel-Nant-Bran is a village higher up on the south slopes of the Eppynt, where the farming community have lived and worked for many generations.

Soar, the Hamlet of Soar is located near Llanfihangel-Nant-Bran.
