St. Stephens Church
Llanstephan

Work Required

It is now our task to ensure that this special place will be available to those who recognise its spiritual values into the next millennium. In an increasingly peripatetic age where the close ties of individuals and families to one particular place are weakened by mobility it is essential that places such as the church in Llanstephan, which caters both for the needs of the regular worshipper and the casual visitor to find something of God outside of themselves, remain available as a spiritual resource to give soul and meaning. To do this it is essential that we undertake a comprehensive programme of restoration. Most immediately we must restore the roof . The Victorian restoration altered the roof so that it was no longer capable of bearing the load of the stone shingles. Consequently over the years the walls have begun to bow outwards.
It is necessary that put back the structural strength to bear this load and also restore the shingles so that they will be weather proof. The tower too requires attention with repointing and the suggestion that we might weatherproof it by lime-washing it with six coats of lime-wash to which tallow is added for extra protection. We would also like to take this opportunity to rewire, properly light and heat the church. Other work will include replacing the plaster to the ceiling and walls in the chancel to restore the original look. We would also like to lime wash the walls of the nave to make the church lighter and to protect the stone work.
The removal of a few pews at the rear of the church will create a useful space for parish use after harvest festivals and special services as well as during special events such as concerts. The church has served as a focus and meeting place for the community throughout its long history and it is important that it retains that role. All this work requires a great deal of money and although we are faithful and dedicated we are not many. We would ask you to consider supporting our project to continue the important work of this place as it witnesses to the enduring power of the love of God as something greater and better than ourselves.
